Couples Counseling***

For Couples Who Are Wanting:

  • A More Loving Relationship

  • To Put Their Relationship First

  • Sexual Intimacy

  • Affair Recovery *

I believe that most relationships can be successful and return to a very loving place. I have developed a couples intensive that helps reconnect couples and break down communication barriers.

What makes the couples intensive different from other counseling?

  • The intensive format allows for individuals to maximize the time spent with me and to restore the relationship quickly and efficiently.  I have had proven success with this method for getting couples back "on track" and with each partner finding happiness.

What happens in the sessions?

  • First Session: I like to meet with the couple and discuss what brought you to counseling. You might be asked to fill out homework after this session. If so I will request that each of you individually fill out an on-line questionnaire* that will help me get to know a little more about you, and your views of the relationship. This takes only about 30 minutes.

  • Second and Third Session: I will meet with each partner individually for a brief history of the relationship and to learn a little bit more about you, individually. (Individual meetings are based on the comfortability of both partners as well as therapist recommendation.)

  • Fourth Session: We will meet as a couple and discuss together and formulate a plan for future sessions. We will use your strengths as a couple to help work through the concerns of the relationships. (Counseling does continue past the four sessions.)

How long are sessions?

  • The individual sessions are 45 minutes and the couples sessions are 45-90 minutes.**

Are there any other options for couples counseling?

  • Yes, I do 1/2 day intensives (3.5-4 hours) to accomplish the most in the shortest amount of time. The longer time allows for more structured interventions (ie Gottman), for both partners to have time to share, and sometimes homework to given in between sessions. Sometimes couples may opt for 1 intensive and then 45-90 minute sessions or they may continue on to longer sessions. If you are interested in the 1/2 day intensive please state this in your email to me as that is scheduled differently. Please let me know if you are interested in the longer sessions.

Affair Recovery***

Affair Recovery (depending on the couple) can follow a bit different path than the Couples’ Intensive. We will begin our sessions together and might not meet individually. I have successfully developed a multi-step treatment for couples who have experienced an affair. This treatment plan helps couples recover, rebuild trust, create a new loving relationship and continue on in their marriage (if they choose.) Kim has found much success in this plan and 90% of couples Kim has worked with end up staying married.

The 1/2 day intensive listed above is very helpful for affair recovery.

**Couples sessions are not covered by insurance. Insurance may state that they cover couples sessions when you call, but often rejects the claim once submitted. For insurance to cover a session there must be an identified client with a diagnosis that insurance determines suitable for payment and with a treatment plan that insurance thinks will be effective for the diagnosis. In couples counseling the “couple” is the client which can not have a diagnosis. If you want to see if your insurance covers couples counseling we can discuss trying to submit a claim for the 45-53 minute session only during our first visit.
